Genesis, Salgado's last major work, on display in Naples

The PAN-Palazzo Arti Napoli in Naples will host from Oct. 18, 2017 to Jan. 28, 2018 the latest major work by renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado: Genesis.

An eight-year journey among the remotest places on Earth gave rise to the last great work of Sebastião Salgado, among the most celebrated contemporary photographers: the Genesis exhibition to be held from Oct. 18, 2017 to Jan. 28, 2018 at PAN-Palazzo Arti Napoli in Naples will show it.

245 extraordinary black-and-whiteimages will tell the story of the wonders of our planet: the landscapes, the animals, but also those indigenous peoples who still remain untouched in the confines of the Amazon, the equatorial forests, the deserts of South Africa, in the forests of New Guinea. Salgado spent several months with each of these groups and took a series of images that show them in total harmony with nature.

The exhibition is divided into five sections, the places where the photographer took his shots: Planet South, The Sanctuaries of Nature, Africa, The Great North, the Amazon and the Pantanal.

Genesis is curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado on a project by Contrasto and Amazonas Images, in collaboration with Civita Mostre and the Department of Culture and Tourism of the City of Naples.

From the curator’s words, “Genesis is a search for the world of origins, how it took shape, evolved, and existed for millennia before modern life accelerated its rhythms and began to distance us from the essence of our nature. It is a journey through land and seascapes, discovering peoples and animals that have escaped the embrace of the contemporary world. Evidence that our planet still includes vast remote regions, where nature reigns in the silence of its pristine magnificence; authentic wonders in the Poles, tropical rainforests, the vastness of savannas and scorching deserts, among glacier-covered mountains and lonely islands. Regions too cold or arid for anything but the most resilient life forms, areas that are home to animal species and ancient tribes whose very survival relies on isolation. Photographs, those of Genesis, aspire to reveal such enchantment; a visual tribute to a fragile planet that we all have a duty to protect.”

The exhibition is already on an international tour, and in the exhibition bookshop it will be possible to purchase the publication with more than a thousand illustrations published by Taschen dedicated to the Genesis project.

A public meeting with Salgado himself will be held on October 17 at 4 p.m. in the Sala dei Baroni of the Maschio Angioino.
