Gamba Castle celebrates Mario Cresci's deep connection to the Aosta Valley

Until June 18, 2023, the Gamba Castle hosts the exhibition "Mon cher Abbé Bionaz! Mario Cresci a Photographer for the Aosta Valley," which presents through his photographs the deep relationship between the Ligurian artist and the Aosta Valley territory since 1990.

The Gamba Castle in Châtillon - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Aosta Valley hosts until June 18, 2023 the exhibition Mon cher Abbé Bionaz! Mario Cresci a photographer for the Aosta Valley. Curated by Luca Fiore and produced by Le Macchine Effimere, the exhibition, which is spread over three floors of the museum, aims to enhance the sixteen shots by Mario Cresci (Chiavari, 1942), one of the masters of Italian photography, preserved in the regional collections, while at the same time highlighting the deep relationship that binds the Ligurian artist to the Aosta Valley territory since 1990.

The very title of the exhibition refers to the strong link between Cresci, dedicated since the 1960s and 1970s to delving into the different aspects of the rural world, and the images left by Abbé Émile Bionaz (1862-1930), a writer, hiker and photographer, but above all a parish priest of Saint-Nicolas for thirty-seven years, who lovingly documented the everyday rural life in which he worked.
Another element of interest to Cresci were the objects preserved at the MAV - Museum of Valdostan Craftsmanship of Tradition in Fénis, belonging to the IVAT Collection and the Brocherel Collection (Palazzo Madama - Civic Museum of Ancient Art in Turin).
Thus were born the two series Mon cher Abbé Bionaz! and Fatti a mano that, between photography and design, combine contemporary language with the contents of tradition.

Mario Cresci’s exhibition at the Gamba Castle is intended to be is a true journey through time: a tribute to the territory, history and culture of Valle d’Aosta.

The exhibition project is accompanied by a valuable catalog that collects the sixteen photographs preserved at the Gamba Castle, other unpublished photographs from the project The Rural World of the Aosta Valley, and images created for the occasion. The volume inaugurates the new series “Photographic Archives” of the Castello Gamba Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
