In Turin, GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea will host from October 16, 2024 to March 9, 2025 the exhibition Berthe Morisot. Impressionist Painter, curated by Maria Teresa Benedetti and Giulia Perin, in collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, a museum that has the largest collection of works by the Impressionist painter from which important paintings come, and with the scientific advice of Sylvie Patry, one of the leading international experts on Berthe Morisot; organized and promoted by Fondazione Torino Musei, GAM Torino and 24 ORE Cultura - Gruppo 24 ORE. The exhibition aims to celebrate the history and artistic journey of the famous painter, illustrating her connection with the poetics of the Impressionist movement and bringing out her highly personal way of capturing the transience of the moment, to symbolize the fragility of existence, able to gracefully represent the elements of nature and reality.
The exhibition will present a selection of works, including famous paintings and etchings, from prestigious public institutions, including, in addition to the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Musée d’Ixelles in Brussels, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) in Paris, and from important private collections, with the aim of tracing the life and artistic career of Berthe Morisot, from her beginnings to her full adherence to Impressionist poetics.
The exhibition itinerary is developed in thematic sections dedicated to the main protagonist subjects of Morisot’s production: outdoor places, interiors animated by figures caught in intimate situations or in the brilliance of social life, seascapes, family, houses and gardens. The undisputed protagonist of his production, light envelops and radiates through brilliant brushstrokes the surface of the works, reaching its maximum expression in the en plein air scenes, always characterized by vibrant and chromatically intense atmospheres.
A great interpreter of Nouvelle Peinture, Berthe Morisot played an important role in the history of the Impressionist movement by participating in seven of the movement’s eight exhibitions held from 1874 to 1886 (the only absence in 1879 due to the birth of her daughter). In 1874 Berthe married Eugène Manet, Édouard’s brother. Regardless of Manet’s presence, Morisot continued to live intensely in her own creative life, tying herself directly to the group.
The exhibition layout will also include a display, specially designed for the exhibition, by Stefano Arienti, creating a comparison with Morisot and the values of Impressionist language, curated by GAM director Chiara Bertola.
