From September 9, 2022 to January 31, 2023, the Estensi Galleries in Modena presents the exhibition Simon Starling. Metamorfuoco. Under the Light of Tintoretto, in which thecontemporary artist dialogues with a masterpiece of the museum and the artistic heritage of the Estense Galleries. Aninnovative installation will take visitors through animmersive experience thanks to a single work that links some of the most topical themes to the museum’s heritage.
The title is also intended to refer to the current drought and more generally to the effects of climate change. Conceived in the context of Modena’s Estense Galleries and inspired by the works of Tintoretto ’s painting cycle in the Estense Gallery and the xylographs of the Estense Library, the exhibition is the result of Simon Starling’s work of exploration and imagination in relation to the cultural context of the area, carried out with the support of Marazzi for the flooring of the work.
The exhibition is part of a program inaugurated in 2021 that each year sees a contemporary artist measure themselves against works in the museum collections and the themes they address. The in-residence project invites artists each year to inhabit the museum by establishing a dialectical relationship with it; contemporary art thus becomes part of the museum of ancient art not as an extraneous insertion but as a translator of the instances that contemporaneity requires it to address.
With this in mind, the Gallerie Estensi of Modena asked Gianfranco Maraniello, recently appointed to direct the Area Musei d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Milan, to contribute to the articulation of a program of artistic interventions that would be able to bring the critical and inventive gaze of protagonists of the contemporary scene to bear on the museum’s characteristics: its works, its history, the venue itself, the professionalism of the team as well as the economic and cultural network of the region. The first invitation was extended to Simon Starling (1967), whose interventions have been hosted in several major museums around the world and in major art exhibitions. His works are in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 2005 he was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize.
