A nearly two-year-long exhibition (Oct. 16, 2018 to Oct. 1, 2020) at the Metropolitan Museum in New York aims to put the Dutch Golden Age paintings held at the U.S. museum in a new light: the exhibition, titled In Praise of Painting: Dutch Masterpieces at the Met, in fact, brings together sixty-five works from the so-called “Dutch Golden Age,” organized by theme to introduce the public to the main issues in 17th-century Dutch art, from religious debate to interest in domestic life and women’s activities. The exhibition, assures curator Adam Eaker, assistant curator at the Met’s Department of European Painting, will read the Dutch Golden Age from a fresh, new perspective.
Paintings that are usually placed in separate areas in the museum will be placed side by side, creating a narrative that will bring visitors inside the art of the time, plus there will also be an opportunity to show rarely exhibited works, such as Margareta Haverman ’s Flower Vase (Breda, 1693 - Frankrijk, 1739), one of only two paintings by the artist known to exist. And there will also be no shortage of the most famous masterpieces, such as Jan Vermeer ’s Woman with a Pitcher of Water (Delft, 1632 - 1675) or the Portrait of Gerard de Lairesse painted by Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden, 1606 - 1669).
The title of the exhibition (“In Praise of Painting”) takes the title of one of the leading treatises of the time, Lof der Schilder-Konst (“The Praise of Painting”) published in 1642 by the painter Philips Angel (Middelburg, 1616 - 1683), a pioneering defense of realism in painting. More information can be found on the dedicated page on the Met’s website.
