From Toulouse-Lautrec to Kandinsky, masterpieces of 20th century graphic art on display at the Reggia di Monza

From Sept. 28, 2024 to Feb. 23, 2025, the Reggia di Monza will host an exhibition exploring graphic design as an autonomous art form through 120 works by Italian and international masters of the 20th century, from Picasso to Fontana.

From Sept. 28, 2024 to Feb. 23, 2025, theOrangerie at the Reggia di Monza welcomesthe exhibition From Renoir to Picasso, Miró to Fontana. 120 Masterpieces of 20th-century Graphics, curated by Simona Bartolena with Enrico Sesana and Luigi Tavola. The exhibition, produced by ViDi cultural in collaboration with the Consorzio Villa Reale e Parco di Monza and sponsored by the City of Monza, takes visitors on a journey to the heart of the European art scene between the end of the 19th century and after World War II.

With more than 120 original works, some extremely rare, the exhibition highlights the value of graphic art as an autonomous form of expression. Great masters such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Vasilij Kandinsky and Lucio Fontana used graphic art to experiment with innovative techniques, entrusting the printed sheet with their most daring research.

The exhibition tour begins symbolically in the second half of the 19th century, with leading figures such as Renoir and Cézanne, and continues through the major artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century. Among the artists in the exhibition are leading figures of Cubism, such as Picasso and Fernand Léger, and of the Bauhaus school, represented by Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

Another focus of the exhibition is the graphics produced by exponents of the German expressionist movement Die Brücke, including Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Max Pechstein. The exhibition also explores the important tradition of Italian graphic art, with works by masters such as Gino Severini, Giorgio de Chirico, and Giorgio Morandi, up to key figures in informal art such as Emilio Vedova and Alberto Burri.

The exhibition not only recounts the history of art, but offers a reflection on the techniques used, from etching to lithography, highlighting the collaboration between artists and printers, a relationship that often crosses the boundaries between conception and execution.

The exhibition catalog has been curated by Ponte43 for ViDi cultural, offering an additional tool to explore the role of graphic art in twentieth-century art.
