From Marina AbramoviÄ? to Francis Alÿs, an exhibition in Merano on the theme of community

From June 25 to September 25, 2022, Merano Arte presents the exhibition "Together. Interact - Interplay - Interfere," dedicated to the theme of community, with works by Marina Abramović, Francis Alÿs, Daniel Spoerri, Tania Bruguera, Yoko Ono and many others.

Running from June 25 to September 25, 2022, at Merano Arte is the exhibition Together. Interact - Interplay - Interfere, curated by Judith Waldmann: with this exhibition, the South Tyrolean exhibition space places the theme of community, which holds central significance for contemporary society, at the center of its programming. The COVID-19 pandemic and the recent conflict in Europe confront us with the fragility of peaceful and serene forms of coexistence.

Different forms of community are investigated in the group exhibition from different perspectives through the works of Adrian Piper, Anna Maria Maiolino, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Bart Heynen, Brave New Alps and MAGARI, Christian Niccoli, Daniel Spoerri, Francis Alÿs, Franz Erhard Walther, Hannes Egger, Isabell Kamp, Jivan Frenster, Karin Schmuck, Marina Abramović and Ulay, melanie bonajo, Norma Jeane, Officinadïdue, Rirkrit Tiravanija, SPIT!, Tania Bruguera and Yoko Ono. On the one hand, the exhibition will include a series of works, including When Faith Moves Mountains (2002) by Francis Alÿs, that tell how in groups one can grow beyond oneself and achieve meaningful goals; on the other hand, works such as We The Enemy (2017) by the collective SPIT! question the tendency of groups to repress individuality and diversity.

In the exhibition, the audience is repeatedly invited to leave their “comfort zone” and take active roles together. These interactive and sometimes participatory aspects are divided into three sections: Interact brings together collective actions and participatory projects carried out together on site, such as the creation of a collective vegetable garden on the terrace of the Kunsthaus or the reeanctment of Daniel Spoerri’s “eat art performance” Zehn Suppenrezepte, made in the 1980s in Brunnenburg, near Merano; Interplay concerns works in which visitors can interact with each other in a playful way, such as by playing ping pong together (Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tomorrow is the Question, 2015) or by using one of Franz Erhard Walther’s activating objects from the series Erster Werksatz (1963-1969); Interfere refers to art that appeals to the political and social engagement, empathy, and sense of responsibility of visitors and visitors. The Officinadïdue collective, for example, provides the public with poplar seeds-a plant capable of absorbing huge amounts of CO2-demonstrating how everyone can fight against global warming.

The exhibition ends with a particularly poetic collective artwork: the WISH TREE (1996 - in progress) by Yoko Ono invites all of us to make a wish for the future and write it on a card. These cards will flow, along with millions of others collected around the world, into the installation in Reykjavík dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The title, sadly always relevant, is Imagine Peace Tower.

The exhibition opens Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays and holidays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information visit the Merano Arte website.
