From Maria Lai to Lamberto Pignotti, a rare research exhibition on visual poetry on ceramics at CAMeC

At CAMeC - Center for Modern and Contemporary Art(La Spezia), the exhibition Poetry and Pottery continues until April 29 (it began on January 26). An unprecedented adventure between ceramics and visual poetry, the first Italian exhibition of visual poetry on ceramics, which presents to the public works by the main artists active in this field. It is a research exhibition project that continues CAMeC’s activity dedicated to visual poetry and offers a series of very rare works, since ceramics is an art form little practiced by visual poets: there are only a few hundred examples in the world. Thus, in the rooms of the La Spezia museum, the works of about thirty verbovisual poets alternate, developing different themes: from concrete poetry to Italian and international visual poetry to visual writings. Among the names featured are Sarenco (Isaia Mabellini), Lamberto Pignotti, Lucia Marcucci, Maria Lai, Luigi Tola, Giovanni Fontana, Ugo Carrega, Roberto Malquori, Giuseppe Chiari, Vittorio Gelmetti, Ruggero Maggi, and Aldo Mondino, as well as international artists such as Alain Arias Misson, Julien Blaine, Ladislav Novak, Jean François Bory, Pierre and Ilse Garnier, Klaus Groh, Joan Brossa, Bartolomé Fernando, Carlos Pazos, Fernando Millán, John Furnival, and Emmet Williams.

The exhibition, curated by Giosuè Allegrini and Marzia Ratti, was created thanks to the support of Sarenco and the contributions of private collectors such as Paolo Scatizzi, Paolo Berardelli, Luigi Bonotto, Giuseppe Verzelletti, some of the artists in the exhibition and master ceramist Michelangelo Marchi. “Based on the recollections of Sarenco, Michelangelo Marchi and other still living visual poets,” the presentation reads, "the exhibition takes up and completes the history of Visual Poetry on ceramic support, limited to works made before the year 2000. However, also included in the scholarly catalog accompanying the exhibition are the Azulejus series created by SARENCO in 2004 and some works produced in more recent times by Pignotti and artists related to Visual Poetry."

Poetryand Pottery can be visited during CAMeC’s opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays (except Easter Monday). Rates: full 5 euros, reduced 4 (for groups of 7 to 25 people, children and young people aged 6 to 18, over 65, convention members, Friends of the Museums and Friends of CAMeC, university lecturers and teachers of Secondary Schools in historical-artistic and archaeological disciplines with suitable ID and not resident in the Municipality of La Spezia, Italian and foreign university students, postgraduates and doctoral students in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, Art History and Academy of Fine Arts), special reduced 3,5 euros for schoolchildren from outside the provinces of La Spezia, Genoa and Massa-Carrara, free admission for civil disabled, differently abled, children under 6 years of age, chaperones of organized groups, guides from La Spezia province, schoolchildren from the provinces of La Spezia, Genoa and Massa-Carrara, teachers from La Spezia municipality with appropriate identification, students of La Spezia University Pole, La Spezia Municipality Youth Card holders, donors and their guests, ICOM members, journalists. Also provided is a cumulative ticket (12 euros, validity 72 hours) to visit CAMeC, Lia Museum, Seal Museum, St. George’s Castle Museum, Ethnographic Museum and Diocesan Museum.
