From Luni to Rome: the story of the construction of Trajan's Column told in an exhibition in Florence

The Boboli Gardens Lemon House will host from June 21 to October 6, 2019 the story of the construction of Trajan's Column: from the marble blocks of Luni to Rome.

The Limonaia of the Boboli Gardens in Florence will host the exhibition Building a Masterpiece: the Trajan Column, curated by Giovanni De Pasquale and Fabrizio Paolucci, from June 21 to October 6, 2019.

The exhibition aims to tell the story of the construction of the Trajan Column, a monument that was meant to celebrate the military victories in Dacia of Emperor Trajan. This was inaugurated on May 12, 113 A.D. inside the Forum of Trajan, but colossal blocks of marble from the quarries of Luni, 800 meters above sea level, were used for its construction, subsequently transported as far as Portus Romae, perrcoursing 200 nautical miles and finally up to Rome by ascending the Tiber.

A feat narrated in the exhibition through dozens of works from Italy’s leading archaeological museums and scale and life-size models made specifically to illustrate the complex procedures of transporting the blocks and the various stages of the Column’s construction site.

This is why the Trajan Column is also considered a monument to the technological and construction wisdom of the Roman world.
