From Lucio Fontana to Arnaldo Pomodoro, at the MAGI '900 Museum here's Not Only Pop!

Running from Oct. 6, 2018 to Jan. 13, 2019 at the MAGI '900 Museum is the exhibition 'Not Only Pop!', a look at the 1960s in Italy.

The MAGI ’900 Museum in Pieve di Cento (province of Bologna) is hosting, from October 6, 2018 to January 13, 2019, the exhibition NON SOLO POP! Works of the Sixties from the MAGI ’900 Collection, an intense exhibition that, drawing from the Emilia museum’s vast collection, offers the public a selection of more than one hundred works by as many artists active in the 1960s, to remind us that alongside the great historicized names, that era was rich in lesser-known talents but who contributed to making that decade particularly fruitful. The title refers to the fact that much of the art of the 1960s did not sanction a clean break with previous experiences: on the contrary, the transitions were gradual and the caesuras with respect to the postwar legacy were not total.

Curated by Valeria Tassinari, the exhibition falls on the fiftieth anniversary of Sixty-Eight, considered the year of rebellion and provocation but also of the economic boom and the power of imagination brought into everyday life, and it makes use of an installation that emphasizes the relevance of the research of that time, which today induces us to reread those years with curiosity and attention. Experimentation and conservative instances, explorations and contradictions, with artists claiming a central role in society: the exhibition aspires to reconstruct the 1960s in a comprehensive way.

Among the works that the public will be able to admire are the Minimum Collection 8×10 collected by Cesare Zavattini, of which a precious selection is exhibited, Melotti’sAlberello, Marotta’s ironic Palm in fluorescent methacrylate, and more figurative works by Guttuso, the “holes” by Fontana, Pomodoro’s “sphere,” Ferroni’s Existential Realism and Alviani’s Programmed Art, Stefanoni’s conceptual approach and Afro’s latest informal, the linguistic games of Concrete Poetry and Mariani’s Pop seduction, the materials of tradition and industrial materials.

And just to emphasize the relations between art and industrial innovation in the museum founded by collector and entrepreneur Giulio Bargellini, on Saturday, October 6, at 5 p.m., on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition, Patrizio Bianchi (councillor for coordination of European development policies, school, vocational training, university, research and work of the Emilia-Romagna Region) will introduce the public to a reflection on the aspects that characterized the 1960s. From the international framework to the extraordinary transformations in which Italy was a protagonist, it will also come to talk about entrepreneurship, and how creativity was widely expressed in this sphere as well, thanks to the testimonies of some of the best-known entrepreneurs of the Emilia-Romagna region, including Enrico Fava, Tonino Lamborghini, Ugo Poppi and Marino Golinelli.

The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of MAGI ’900: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on Monday (last entry at 5 p.m.). Also closed on December 24, 25, 26 and 31 and January 1.
