From March 21 to April 2024, Dep Art Gallery in Milan hosts the exhibition Regine Schuman, Iris, the third solo show the gallery dedicates to Regine Schumann (Goslar, Germany, 1961). The exhibition, curated by Alberto Mattia Martini, traces, in about 20 works, the evolution of her artistic production up to the recent Corners series where, thanks to the introduction of new visual planes, Schumann experiments with a greater dynamic complexity between material, light and the viewer.
In Greek mythology, Iris is the messenger of the gods and personification of the rainbow, considered a bridge between heaven and earth that unites different worlds. This symbolism is intimately linked to the work of Regine Schumann, whose works create a profound connection between the material, plexiglass, and the immaterial, namely light. The title “Iris” resonates perfectly with Regine Schumann’s work, highlighting her meticulous and thorough investigation of the relationship between light and color.
As curator Alberto Mattia Martini states, “In Regine Schumann’s works, color and light become one, coming to transcend the real and immersing the viewer’s eye in a timeless dimension, with no limits of boundaries for the gaze. The artist’s new production of works deepens a constant dialogue between the chromatic irradiation of color and the iris (Iris) of the viewer, offering a unique visual experience imbued with mystery and fascination. The continuous correspondence between artificial and natural light, shadow, color and space is transfigured into a dynamic artistic composition, in a perpetual mutation that seems to induce the chromatic surface to vibrate and come alive.”
“Exploring the emotional and symbolic potential of color and the ability of light to shape perception,” the curator continues, “Regine Schumann, has shaped some new works with one or more beveled corners, leading us back to Mark Rothko’s large rectangles, where painting seems to evaporate the contours, also giving rise in the German artist’s case to works that stand out for their visual intensity and conceptual depth. Plexiglass plates create veils of monochromatic pigment from which emerges, as in an epiphany, the light that, forging surfaces of energy, pervades and interacts with the space that welcomes them.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog in Italian and English, including updated bio-bibliographical apparatus and the curator’s text. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
