Coming to the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome is a major exhibition that will deal with the very close political and cultural ties established during the seventeenth century between the Spanish court and the Italian states.
Curated by Gonzalo Redín Michaus, the exhibition"From Caravaggio to Bernini. Masterpieces of the Italian Seventeenth Century in the Royal Collections of Spain," which will be held from April 14 to July 30, 2017, will present visitors with valuable works from the Royal Collections of Spain, consisting largely of diplomatic gifts from Italian rulers with the aim of gaining the favor of the sovereigns of Spain, whose possessions conditioned the Italian political situation at that time.
Among these works were Guercino ’s Lot and the Daughters and Guido Reni’s The Conversion of Saul; other masterpieces were commissioned or purchased by the king’s proxies, such as Bernini ’s Crucifix from the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, while others were bought by representatives of the Spanish monarchy in Italy, upon whose deaths the works went to enrich the royal collections, such as Caravaggio’s Salome.
Relations between Italy and Spain were also consolidated through the work of Italian artists at the Spanish court, as in the case of Luca Giordano, or through travel and stays in Italy by Spanish artists, such as Jusepe de Ribera and Diego Velázquez.
