From Amsterdam to Bergamo: Rembrandt's youthful self-portrait at the Accademia Carrara

On loan to theCarrara Academy in Bergamo until October 10, 2021 is the celebratedYouthful Self-Portrait by Rembrandt (Leiden, 1606 - Amsterdam 1669) from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This is a special occasion for a dossier exhibition that aims to recount the context and fortune of the golden century of Dutch painting through masterpieces from the Carrara collection and thus tell the story of the Bergamasque museum venue and the works it holds.

The exhibition focuses on the genre ofself-portraiture and portraiture, which was widespread in seventeenth-century Dutch society, and among the painters who most distinguished themselves in the genre is Rembrandt, both for his freedom of expression and his inventiveness. Rembrandt in a Marvelous History, this is the title of the exhibition, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the Dutch artists in the museum’s collection in a new, dedicated display, and to delve into the themes of portraiture, self-portraiture and self-seeking.

Two focuses, In Rembrandt’s workshop and The European fortunes of the Dutch artist, place the emphasis respectively on a nucleus of works by his direct pupils, such as Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Dirck Dircksz van Santvoort, and others by painters inspired by the master between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as Govaert Flinck, Giuseppe Nogari, Bartolomeo Nazari, and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. Works from the Carrara collection that are now reinterpreted on this occasion in a new and international key.
