Castel Thun presents illustrated magazines dedicated to 19th-century fashion inspired by Parisian haute couture in the exhibition.

At Castel Thun in Vigo di Ton, the exhibition À la mode française will be open to the public from June 15 to October 27, 2019. Style, Models and Milliners for the Thun Countesses, produced in collaboration with the ProvincialArchives of the Autonomous Province of Trento’s Cultural Heritage Office.

Starting with an elegant cinnabar-red afternoon dress, the review focuses on the section of the Thun library devoted to illustrated fashion magazines of the 19th century. Somewhat relevant readings for the dissemination and popularization of taste, offering a detailed and articulate panorama ofwomen’s elegance, which was inspired by Paris as the center ofhaute couture.



The large-format and image-rich magazines La mode illustrée, La mode française, and La Novelité presented readers with models for dresses, accessories, and embroidery, with instructions for reproducing them, as well as columns on domestic economy and social life. In addition, the more luxurious editions offered attached color plates, with ideations by Parisian milliners, which Carolina Arsio Thun and her daughters preserved in a beautiful collection, which has remained hidden until now.

Etchings, woodcuts and watercolor lithographs that, from 1857 to 1900, trace the evolution of style: from the hourglass line imposed by the crinoline to the sinuous forms of the Belle Époque. Dresses that were worn on the occasions of social life, at receptions, on holidays, at horse races. In a more collected dimension, the young Thun countesses posed in front of the photographer, and thanks to their aptitude for embroidery they made exquisite gowns on the trail of colorful patterns.
