From March 16 to April 21, 2019, the Franco Leidi Return retrospective opens in Genoa, Italy, between the Museo di Sant’Agostino and Spazio46 at Palazzo Ducale. The exhibition curated by Virginia Monteverde is made possible thanks to the collaboration of Leslie Johnson, the artist’s widow, and her daughter Dafne.
Franco Leidi was born in Milan in 1933 and from the 1970s until his death in 2008 lived and worked in Sweden, but Genoa was the city where he was artistically and culturally formed, attending theAccademia Lingustica di Belle Arti from 1957 to 1961 and the University, where he graduated in Sociology. It is the Ligurian capital, therefore, that welcomes his anthological exhibition. This important exhibition event takes place between the rooms of the Museo di Sant’Agostino, which permanently houses a highly valuable collection of sculptures, frescoes, and stone artifacts, and the Spazio46 of the Ducal Palace, inside the majestic Cortile Maggiore. The exhibition is configured in two basic sections: That of small, medium and large drawings, photogravures, photographs, a video (in which parades anassemblageof engravings, now free now framed), and of two sculptures, at Spazio46 of the historic Genoese Palace, precisely, and that of large assemblageand collagesof watercolors, sculptures, again of medium-sized watercolors, of large installations with tools of multiple references, displayed in the museum halls of the Sant’Agostino, a prestigious convent complex of medieval origin. Viewed as a whole, the exhibition connotes itself as an engaging Theater of the Imaginary.
Accompanying the exhibition is the catalog Franco Leidi. Return, texts by Viana Conti, Wirklichkeit Books editions. The exhibition can be visited during the hours of the two museums: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Museum of St. Augustine; Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Spazio 46 at the Ducal Palace.
