At the Museo del Novecento in Milan will be open to the public from April 3 to May 31, 2020 the exhibition Franco Guerzoni. The Subtracted Image.
Curated by Martina Corgnati, the exhibition will present works made in the last decade by Franco Guerzoni (Modena, 1948): a true itinerary around the wall. Protagonists will in fact be old and peeling walls, with plaster and bulges, cracks, molds and scratches, depicted first in photographs used as support for his work, then represented on canvas. The Modenese artist’s research has focused on a sophisticated personal archaeology.
These latest works will be placed in dialogue with works from the early 1970s, born out of his collaboration with his photographer friend Luigi Ghirri.
Guerzoni’s latest research, titled Intravedere, which proposes small rooms of chalky material that float like open books, but whose image is hidden and removed from the viewer’s gaze, will also be presented. Also visible are the work-books made by the artist since the 1970s: from the 1970 Book of Dreams to the 2014 Ideal Museum. These are books that hold the reflections of Guerzoni’s many poets, critics and literary friends.
A showcase in the exhibition itinerary will be dedicated to photographic sequences, often unpublished, that recount projects from his origins that the artist called Unsolved.
Finally, a video made by Eva Marisaldi and Enrico Serotti specifically for the exhibition will illustrate the most significant stages of Guerzoni’s entire artistic activity, including what will not be in the exhibition.
