Fragment, the exhibition of Paolo Garau in Arpino

Ladislaus Castle in Arpino is hosting Paolo Garau's exhibition Fragment from May 4 to June 30, 2019.

The Ladislao Castle in Arpino, home of the Umberto Mastroianni Foundation, will host the exhibition Fragment from May 4 to June 30, 2019. This will present to the public the artistic production of Paolo Garau (Rome, 1975).

The exhibition, curated by Roberta Melasecca, is part of a broad project that aims to reflect on sculpture and drawing: sculptures will be placed in the spaces of the Foundation, in close dialogue with the works of the permanent collection, while a confrontation between drawing and sculpture will be the protagonist in the spaces of 28 Piazza di Pietra Fine Art Gallery in Rome from next September.

Visitors will be greeted in the inner courtyard by a large-scale sculpture that compares with the monumentality of Umberto Mastroianni, among the most eclectic and brilliant sculptors of the 20th century. In the rooms eighteen sculptures made of acrylic resin and gold leaf will be displayed alongside works from the permanent collection.

“Paolo Garau’s artistic research moves from a deep knowledge of reality, but it is not naturalistic vision of classical art; it proceeds with the decomposition of objects but it is not multiplicity of vision of Cubism; it deforms the figure but it is not tragic existential condition of expressionism. Instead, it breaks down complexity, introducing simplicity and triggering a process of inner elaboration. The white fragment does not reveal the arcane intimate world of things, but internalizes it and implodes it within itself in order to activate the unconscious mechanisms of imagination. Fragilities, evanescent travails, metaphysical memories remain captured on the polished plane, which is also nude or covered with a golden patina. The faces are anonymous beings, unrecognizable in precise features, sometimes coinciding with essences of anatomical pieces. They leave the body beyond themselves and turn into slices of possible and probable realities. They dress themselves in distant reminiscences and find themselves transformed into solids of revolution with sinuous and soft contours. They contain every human feeling and hope for a simple and immediate contact that can transfer visions and images. They wait to be liberated and acquire renewed identities. The artist, intervening on concrete, on plaster with resin, performs the operation of subtracting and adding: taking away matter, incorporating energy and non-matter according to an exponential function, and, within, finding an infinite number of possible futures, floating along multiple event horizons, coexisting in different dimensions, arriving at the moment before singularity where space and time end,” wrote the curator.
