TheItalian preview of the 55th Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the most important award dedicated to wildlife photography promoted by the Natural History Museum in London, will be held from February 1 to June 2, 2020 at the Fortress of Bard.
Winning the 2019 Wildlife Photographer of the Year title was Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao with his very special shot The Moment. The image captures theencounter of a fox and a groundhog, which has emerged from its den after hibernation, on the Qinghai Plateau in Tibet: the drama and intensity of nature is fully depicted on the groundhog’s snout, as the power of the predator showing its teeth as opposed to the terror of its prey is well highlighted.
On display are more than one hundred winning shots in the nineteen categories of the award, chosen from 48,000 photographs received from 100 countries around the world.
Cruz Erdmann, from New Zealand, received the award for Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2019 with his shot titled Night glow, taken during a ’night dive off Sulawesi, Indonesia. The image depicts a squid during a courtship.
Among the winners are also two Italians: Riccardo Marchegiani with Early riser, category 15-17 years old, and Manuel Plaickner with Pondworld, for the category Behaviour: Amphibians and Reptiles. The former depicted a female Gelada baboon with her cub at dawn on a plateau in Ethiopia’s Simien National Park, while the latter portrayed common frogs in a pond during the mating season.
