The Fortress of Bard will host the 59th Wildlife Photographer of the Year from Feb. 3 to June 2, 2024, the largest award dedicated to wildlife photography, sponsored by the Natural History Museum in London. Using the unique emotional power of photography to engage and excite audiences, images shed light on stories and species from around the world and encourage a future in defense of the Planet.
This year’s competition had 49,957 entries from photographers of all ages and experience levels from 95 countries. Images were judged anonymously by an international panel of experts based on originality, narrative, technical excellence and ethical practice.
Winning the title of Nature Photographer of the Year was French biologist and marine photographer Laurent Ballesta, a previous winner in 2021, thanks to a photo of a horseshoe crab with three small golden carangidae. The exhibition at the Fortress of Bard will present the 100 award-winning shots within light panels that make them even more exciting.
Among the winners are also Italians Alessandro Falco (special mention in the Photojournalism section), Barbara Dall’Angelo (special mention in the Wetlands section), Bruno D’Amicis (special mention in the Natural Art category), Ekaterina Bee (winner in the 11-14 years category), and Pietro Formis (special mention in the Animal Portraits section).
