On the occasion of the upcoming Jubilee, Titian Vecellio ’s Gozzi Altarpiece will be exhibited for the first time in Rome along with five other famous works, all religious in nature and from the Pinacoteca Podesti in Ancona. The six paintings, including five large altarpieces and one small tempera on panel, will be on public view in the capital from November 26, 2024 to March 30, 2025 in the rooms of Palazzo dei Conservatori at the Capitoline Museums, where the exhibition Titian, Lotto, Crivelli and Guercino. Masterpieces from the Pinacoteca di Ancona. Curated by Luigi Gallo, director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, and Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, director of the Direzione dei Musei Civici della Sovrintendenza Capitolina, the exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, under the patronage of Giubileo 2025 - Dicastero per l’Evangelizzazione, and organized by Arthemisia in collaboration with Comune di Ancona, Ancona Cultura, Pinacoteca Civica di Ancona, Regione Marche and Palazzo Ducale di Urbino - Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali Marche.
The aim is to highlight the importance of the Podesti Picture Gallery’s collection and the wealth of the Doric city that commissioned major Italian artists between the 16th and 17th centuries. The public will therefore be able to admire at the Capitoline Museums the Circumcision by Olivuccio Ciccarello, the main interpreter of the renewal of Ancona painting that flourished between the 14th and 15th centuries, from the church of San Francesco ad Alto; the Madonna and Child by Carlo Crivelli, an icon of the Doric collection and the supreme achievement of the Venetian painter who lived and worked in the Marche; and Lorenzo Lotto ’s Alabarda Altarpiece for the church of Sant’Agostino, in which the talent of the Venetian painter, who was exiled to the region on several occasions, is made explicit. Next on display will be the monumental Crucifixion made for the church of San Domenico by Titian, in which the artist explores human tragedy and suffering, and finally Guercino’s imposing Immaculate Con ception, in which the delicate figure of the Virgin stands out against a seascape whose model may be the bay of Ancona.
The Roman exhibition, with this important display of altarpieces from the Doric city, not only testifies to the sacredness and importance that 16th-century Adriatic art assumed, but also anticipates the cultural events planned for the upcoming Jubilee.
“The six extraordinary works,” says Luigi Gallo, “tell the story of the importance of the Podesti Art Gallery’s collection and in filigree the wealth of the Doric city, commissioner of the greatest Italian artists between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Roman exhibition is an important part of a national enhancement of Ancona’s collection that aims to give back to citizens and visitors a glimpse of a crucial period in the history of taste and collecting in the Marche city.”
