For the first time, Natalia Goncharova's works come to Finland

For the first time, works by Russian avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova will be exhibited in Finland, at the Ateneum in Helsinki.

For thefirst time, Finland is dedicating an exhibition to Natalia Goncharova (Negaevo, 1881 - Paris, 1962): in fact, from February 27 to May 17, 2020, theAteneum in Helsinki is hosting an exhibition on the celebrated Russian avant-garde artist.

The exhibition focuses on Goncharova’s most innovative period, from the early twentieth century to the 1920s: visitors have the opportunity to admire more than a hundred works, including paintings and illustrations, as well as costumes, sketches, and ballet recordings. In addition to the visual arts, the artist designed costumes and sets for Sergei Djagilev’s famous Russian ballet and clothes for fashion houses in Moscow and Paris, participated in avant-garde cinema, and made illustrations for experimental poems.

The artist was characterized by a countercultural and nonconformist life and a rich and multifaceted artistic output, in which she combined tradition and innovation, East and West. Her art is a unique example of experimentation between different styles and genres.

The exhibition is curated by Timo Huusko, Matthew Gale and Natalia Sidlina and is organized by theAteneum Art Museum, Tate Modern, London, and the Fondazione di Palazzo Strozzi, Florence.
