Through Feb. 2, 2025, the Merz Foundation in Turin celebrates the centenary of Mario Merz's birth with a selection of works including installations, igloos, tables, canvases and works on paper. A symposium dedicated to him will also be held on Jan. 14 and 15, 2025.

Through Feb. 2, 2025, the Merz Foundation in Turin celebrates the centenary of Mario Merz ’s birth with the second part of the exhibition Something that takes away the weight that keeps the absurdity and lightness of the fairy tale. The exhibition project presents a selection of works including installations, igloos, tables, canvases and works on paper, expanded with three impressive new works that are added to the first installation.

The exhibition explores the concept of deep nature and universal laws that transcend time, inspired by a thought by Mario Merz. The title, taken from one of his writings, reflects the idea of achieving a conceptual lightness, which is found in the works presented, through the need to look at nature and the passage of time.

Among the works on display are the igloo Untitled (gold leaves) (1997), the Four Tables in the Form of Magnolia Leaves (1985, on view here for the first time in Europe) and the vases from L’Horizont de lumière traverse notre vertical du jour (1995). These are joined by two igloos from 1989 and 2002 and an imposing painting, Gecko in the House (1983). The works converse in an evocative space, linking together in an apparent disharmony that is recomposed into a harmonious unity. Between lightness and transformation, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the artistic legacy of Mario Merz.

Also taking place on the two days of Tuesday, January 14 and Wednesday, January 15, 2025 will be Freedom to Have Three Contrasting Ideas, the symposium dedicated to the artist that unfolds as a choral narrative about Mario Merz and his thought. Scholars, critics, art historians and artists, starting from their specific experience, will take turns to offer testimonies, insights and reflections that enhance knowledge about his work and legacy.
