Florence, Tomás Saraceno stars in new major exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi

From February 22 to July 19, 2020, Palazzo Strozzi hosts 'Aria,' a solo exhibition by Tomás Saraceno.

From February 22 to July 19, 2020, Palazzo Strozzi will host its new major exhibition: the protagonist will be Argeintino artist Tomás Saraceno (San Miguel de Tucumán, 1973) and the exhibition is entitled Aria. A visionary and multifaceted artist whose creative research combines art, natural and social sciences, Tomás Saraceno invites us to change our point of view on reality and connect with non-human elements such as dust, insects or plants that become the protagonists of his installations and metaphors of the cosmos.

The exhibition consists of a path of immersive works and participatory experiences between the courtyard and the Piano Nobile, and aims to enhance the historical and symbolic context of Palazzo Strozzi and Florence through a profound and original dialogue between the Renaissance and the contemporary: from man at the center of the world, to man as part of a universe in which to seek a new harmony.

“Carbon emissions,” says Saraceno, “fill the air, particulate matter floats in our lungs, while electromagnetic radiation envelops the earth. Yet it is possible to imagine a different era, the Aerocene, characterized by a sensitivity projected toward a new ecology of behavior. Ecosystems must be thought of as networks of interaction within which each living thing evolves together with others. By focusing less on individuality and more on reciprocity, we can move beyond the consideration of the means necessary to control the environment and hypothesize a shared development of our everyday lives. Let the web guide us.”

Tomás Saraceno trained between Argentina, Italy and Germany, studying at the Städelshule in Frankfurt and the IUAV in Venice. His works make use of different materials: architecture (his training is in fact as an architect), photography, collage, video and more. His research investigates themes such as science, energy, psychology, engineering, and sociology. He has exhibited worldwide: his shows have been held at the Metropolitan in New York, Hamburger Banhof in Berlin, MART in Rovereto, Museion in Bolzano, and Museum Boijmans van Beunigen in Rotterdam. For Saraceno also two participations in the Venice Biennale, in 2003 and 2019. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the most important international museums of contemporary art, from MoMA in New York to Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to the Staatliche Museen in Berlin.
