Florence dedicates an exhibition to Oscar Ghiglia, a great painter of the Italian 20th century

Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence presents from April 7 to September 13, 2022 the exhibition "Oscar Ghiglia. The Novecento Years" to introduce a great painter of the Italian twentieth century.

From April 7 to September 13, 2022, Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence is hosting the exhibition Oscar Ghiglia. The Novecento Years, curated by Leonardo Ghiglia, Lucia Mannini and Stefano Zampieri. Promoted by Città Metropolitana di Firenze and organized by MUS.E in collaboration with theMatteucci Institute of Viareggio, the exhibition aims to acquaint the public with the works of a great 20th-century Italian painter with Tuscan roots, but deeply connected to the European artistic events of his time.

Oscar Ghiglia (Livorno, 1876 - Prato, 1945) chose Florence as his city of choice in which to develop his research and creativity. Looking to the teachings of Giovanni Fattori and ready to embrace the innovations from beyond the Alps, especially the painting of Cézanne, Ghiglia matured a very high pictorial quality, clearly visible in the exhibition through his rich production. Distant from market fashions and major national and international exhibitions, his art experienced a rediscovery starting in the 1960s and 1970s, continued in the following decades, knew a particular prominence with the two exhibitions dedicated to him in 1996 in Livorno and Prato, and in the most recent exhibition held in Viareggio in 2018.

The exhibition intends to focus attention on the years in which the painter achieved results of exceptional quality: suffice it to recall La modella (1928-29), the protagonist of this exhibition, alongside compositional, chromatic and poetic arrangements developed by the painter in his still lifes and portraits.
