The Giorgio Cini Foundation on the Island of San Giorgio in Venice presents On Fire from April 22 to July 24, 2022, an exhibition entirely dedicated to the use of fire as a means of artistic creation in the post-World War II avant-garde. The exhibition is curated by Bruno Corà in collaboration with Luca Massimo Barbero and is promoted by the Giorgio Cini Foundation and Tornabuoni Art.
The exhibition itinerary, divided into six sections, will bring together a selection of the most iconic works made with fire or that include the presence of flame itself; thus, works by Yves Klein, Alberto Burri, Arman, Jannis Kounellis, Pier Paolo Calzolari and Claudio Parmiggiani will be featured.
Although the works featured are united by the element of fire, however, the exhibition intends to focus on each artist, emphasizing the different creative uses that artists make of it. Fire can be found as a tool for burning materials (Klein, Burri, Arman) or as a living presence with its own sensory effects, often spectacular (Klein, Kounellis, Calzolari), and finally as a pictorial trace through the smoke of combustion (Calzolari, Parmiggiani).
The twenty-six works on display come from the artists’ foundations and from loans from major international collections, including masterpieces that have never been shown before or are rarely shown to the public. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication published by Forma Edizioni under the scientific direction of Bruno Corà. The exhibition is realized with the support of Mag Forma and Edizioni.
