Film on Antonio Ligabue flies to France with second French monograph devoted to the painter

Giorgio Diritti's film Volevo nascondermi (I Wanted to Hide) presented at a French film festival. It will be joined by the monographic Antonio Ligabue: Hors Cadre.

The Antonio Ligabue Museum Foundation of Gualtieri (Reggio Emilia), a partner of the Festival International du Film de La Roche-sur-Yon, will present the film Volevo nascondermi (I Wanted to Hide ) by Giorgio Diritti, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, at the 11th edition of the festival (Oct. 12-18, 2020).

The screening of the film dedicated to the painter’s life will be accompanied by the exhibition Antonio Ligabue: Hors Cadre, on view from October 13 to November 14, 2020 at the Musée de La Roche-sur-Yon, Le Cyel. Hors Cadre is the second monographic exhibition in France dedicated to Ligabue.

Produced in collaboration with the Municipality of Gualtieri and the Antonio Ligabue Museum Foundation, which has been consulting with Sergio and Francesco Negri for years, the exhibition displays two major paintings featured in Giorgio Diritti’s film work: the famous Self-Portrait, chosen for the film’s poster, and Diligence with Landscape, a painting that the director first saw in Gualtieri in 1975, being deeply impressed by Ligabue’s art. There will also be two drawings from the second half of the 1950s and the work Buoi con carro a botte (Oxen with barrel cart).

Through a virtual tour, visitors will also see a selection of masterpieces featured in the retrospective Incompreso. The life of Antonio Ligabue through his works, which can be visited until Dec. 13, 2020 in the Salone dei Giganti of Palazzo Bentivoglio in Gualtieri.

“Since 2014, the Antonio Ligabue Museum Foundation has become the point of reference for studies on Ligabue,” said Nadia Stefanel, art historian and project coordinator. "Exploitation, valorization, critical studies, historical archives and didactics are the cornerstones of the path that the Foundation and the Municipality of Gualtieri have set for themselves to expand the knowledge of the artist at the international level as well. For this reason, the invitation of the Festival International du Film de La Roche-sur-Yon, which has collected important presences over the years, was gladly accepted. Ligabue is not the crazy painter who falls into the binomial art/ madness or the binomial instinctive art/naïf, but an artist capable of transforming certain iconographic researches and important encounters into wells from which to draw the sources to create his art."
