Ferdinando Scianna stars in a major retrospective in Forli

The San Domenico Complex in Forli is dedicating a major retrospective to photographer Ferdinando Scianna.

The San Domenico Complex in Forli dedicates a major retrospective to Ferdinando Scianna (Bagheria, 1943), among the most important masters of photography.
"Ferdinando Scianna. Viaggio, racconto, memoria," curated by Denis Curti, Paola Bergna and Alberto Bianda and organized by Civita Mostre, will open its doors on Sept. 22, 2018, to end on Jan. 6, 2019.

The public will be able to admire about two hundred black-and-white photographs spanning theentire career of the Sicilianphotographer.

Heralded as the most extensive anthology of his photographic work, the exhibition is divided into six sections: Memory, The Tale, Obsessions, The Journey, Portraits, Rites and Myths.

In his shots he represented the culture and traditions of his home region, Sicily, current events, war, travel, popular religiosity, landscapes, and portraits of his great friends, masters of the world of art of culture, including Leonardo Sciascia, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Jorge Louis Borges.

Of his work Ferdinando Scianna writes, “As a photographer I consider myself a reporter. As a reporter my fundamental reference is that of my master par excellence, Henri Cartier-Bresson, for whom the photographer must aspire to be an invisible witness, who never intervenes to modify the world and the instants he reads and interprets of reality. I have always made a clear distinction between found and constructed images. I have always considered that I belong to the side of photographers who find images, those that tell and tell you, as in a mirror. Even fashion photographs I have always found them in the hazard of encounters with the world.”

The shots will be accompanied by a documentary dedicated to his professional life.

After the debut in Forlì, sponsored by the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì and Civitas srl in connection with the Settimana del Buon Vivere, the exhibition will be presented in various cities, in Italy and abroad, starting with Palermo (Gallery of Modern Art) and Venice (Casa dei tre Oci) in 2019.
