The exhibition Viaggio, racconto, memoria, a retrospective on Ferdinando Scianna, which closed its doors last Jan. 6 at the Complesso di San Domenico in Forlì, moves to the Modern Art Gallery in Palermo from Feb. 21 to July 28, 2019. Just as in Forli, the exhibition in Palermo will display 200 black and white photos taken by Scianna divided into 6 sections: Memory, The Tale, Obsessions, The Journey, Portraits, Rites and Myths.
“I am no longer sure, it once was, that one can improve the world with a photograph. I remain convinced, however, that bad photographs make it worse,” Scianna once stated.
Ferdinando Scianna is considered one among masters of not only Italian photography. He began to be passionate about this language in the 1960s, telling through images the culture and traditions of his home region, Sicily. His long artistic path winds through various themes - current events, war, travel, popular religiosity - all linked by a single thread: the constant search for form in the chaos of life. In more than 50 years of stories, there is no shortage of suggestions: from Bagheria to the Bolivian Andes, from religious festivals - the debut of his career - to experience in the fashion world, which began with Dolce & Gabbana and Marpessa. Then the reportages (he is part of the photojournalistic agency Magnum), landscapes, his thematic obsessions such as mirrors, animals, things, and finally the portraits of his great friends, masters of the world of art and culture such as Leonardo Sciascia, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Jorge Louis Borges, just to name a few.
To delve deeper into the contents of the exhibition, encouraging reflection on the iconic scope of Ferdinando Scianna’s photography, Civita Sicilia has devised an articulated educational project aimed at both schools and groups of adults and families, which includes classic guided tours, as well as visits-exploration and educational workshops by reservation.
In an audioguide (in Italian and English), Scianna tells firsthand about his understanding of photography and more. A true parallel narrative, to get a closer look at his human and photographic journey. The exhibition also features a documentary dedicated to Ferdinando Scianna’s professional life.
The exhibition will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed Monday). The ticket office closes one hour earlier. For information and reservations you can call 091.8431605 or visit www.ferdinandoscianna.it.
