From October 15 to November 30, 2022, the city of Cagli (Pesaro) will delve into the relationship Federico da Montefeltro had with this land. In the church of San Domenico , in fact, the exhibition Cagli and Federico - between archival documents and paintings by Giovanni Santi is scheduled. It is organized by the municipality with Confcommercio Marche Nord, as part of the tourism promotion and enhancement project Itinerario della Bellezza, of which Cagli is part with 17 other towns in the province of Pesaro Urbino. The exhibition is curated by Massimo Bonifazi and Marco Droghini, and was strongly supported by deputy mayor Benilde Marini and Confcommercio director Amerigo Varotti.
The exhibition seeks to anticipate the close ties established between the dukes of Urbino, starting with Federico himself, with the church of San Domenico and the Cagliese community through the display of a large corpus of epistles preserved in the capitular archives of Cagli, a fund inventoried by Bonifazi himself in 2006. The choice of the church of San Domenico as the exhibition venue because in terms of both the quantity and the quality of the paintings produced, it represents the temple of painting by Giovanni Santi (Colbordolo, c. 1440 - Urbino, 1494), father of Raphael, beginning with his masterpiece, the Tiranni Chapel, and continuing with Christ in Pietà and Saints, an integral part of the Funeral Monument of Battista Tiranni, and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
The exhibition was the subject of extensive historical research by the two curators, which also led to discoveries regarding the church portal and the dukes’ correspondence. Finally, the exhibition is meant to be a tribute to Giovanni Santi, to whom, moreover, Confcommercio Marche Nord has dedicated the Itinerary from the Court of Duke Frederick.
It will be open until Nov. 30 every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Confcommercio will take care of communication activities, guard services and the ticket office. The entrance fee is 3 euros.
