The Etruscans are the protagonists of a major exhibition at the Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna, which from December 7, 2019 to May 24, 2020 hosts Etruschi. Journey to the Lands of the Rasna, an exhibition project on Etruscan civilization capable of bringing together about a thousand objects from sixty Italian and international museums and institutions. The exhibition aims to be a journey into the lands of the Etruscans among archaeology and surprising landscapes and will highlight new excavation and research on the history of one of the most important peoples of ancient Italy.
The metaphor of the journey will give shape and structure to the exhibition, which is divided into two major sections: the first offers a moment of preparation for the journey, acquainting the visitor with the main features of the culture and history of the Etruscan people, through strongly identifying archaeological objects and contexts. Thus prepared, the visitor can face the second section, where the real journey to the lands of the “Rasna” (the latter is the term by which the Etruscans identified themselves) is made.
The itinerary unravels through the territories and centers of Latium, Umbria and Tuscany, which were already the object of attention, wonder and description by travelers of the past, such as the English diplomat George Dennis, who in the 19th century with his The Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria (1848) gave an account of five years of travels that touched on the archaeological sites then known. The journey continues to the Etruscan territories of the Po Valley and Campania, perhaps less known to the general public but important theaters of new archaeological discoveries. Finally, the exhibition naturally dialogues with the extremely rich Etruscan section of the Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna, which testifies to the prominent role of Etruscan Bologna, thus constituting an ideal appendix to the visit path of the temporary exhibition.
The scientific project is curated by Laura Bentini, Anna Dore, Paola Giovetti, Federica Guidi, Marinella Marchesi, Laura Minarini (Istituzione Bologna Musei, Museo Civico Archeologico) and Elisabetta Govi, Giuseppe Sassatelli (Chair of Etruscology and Italic Antiquities, University of Bologna).
