Emilio Scanavino's large-format works in a retrospective at MARCA in Catanzaro, Italy

The MARCA museum in Catanzaro will host a retrospective dedicated to the large-format works of Emilio Scanavino from May 17 to July 15, 2019.

The MARCA Museum in Catanzaro will host the exhibition Emilio Scanavino from May 17 to July 15, 2019. Like Fire in the Ashes. Large Formats. Works 1960 - 1980, curated by Greta Petese and Federico Sardella in collaboration with theScanavino Archive.

More than twenty works selected by the curators from among the artist’s most impressive paintings: through these works, created starting in the 1960s, including oils on canvas, on board and papers from the most prestigious Italian collections, the exhibition aims to present to the public the artistic path of Emilio Scanavino (Genoa, 1922 - Milan, 1986), in particular dwelling on his production of his full maturity, with his most typical series, and covering a time span of about twenty years. Works of his full maturity include Alfabeto senza fine (1974) and I nostri fiori (1973). Also on display is Come fuoco nella cenere, the title work, which was first shown at the XXX Venice Biennale in 1960.

Scanavino’s art is a painting of evocation, rich in presence.

In a 1961 video interview, until now never transcribed and transposed into the catalog produced for the occasion, the artist had stated, “For me painting is condition. And by condition I mean my way of life, my aspirations and so on. [...] Yesterday the painter would go outdoors, paint with the easel and do the landscape. I would say that today many things have changed and the painter needs to look more inside, to feel life directly, pondering certain emotions, which are no longer, let’s say, panoramic, but are interior.”

Adds Federico Sardella in his essay, “Space seems to open up, encounter obstacles, spikes, tangles and then absorb, interpenetrate and submerge them, moving from the full to the empty, from the undifferentiated to the distinct, from the outside to the inside. [...] His painting is pure emanation in which material presences, bearers of omens, seem to conceal something inviolable.”
