Emergency presents an exhibition by photographer Guido Piscitelli on the war

On the occasion of its twenty-fifth birthday, EMERGENCY, with the support of Contrasto, has organized in Venice, from September 13 to October 13, 2019 Zakhem|Ferite|Wounds.War at home|When war comes home, a photographic exhibition by Giulio Piscitelli, who in July won the first prize in the Non-Profit category of the 9th edition of the World Report Award.

After two first exhibitions in Milan and a great success with the public, the exhibition moves to EMERGENCY’s headquarters in Venice(Giudecca Island 212), where it will be inaugurated on Friday, September 13 at 6 p.m.in the presence of Giulio Piscitelli, author of the photographs, Rossella Miccio, President of EMERGENCY, and Fabrizio Foschini, Afghanistan Analysts Network. With this work, EMERGENCY is participating in the 10th edition of the Giudecca and Sacca Fisola Arts Festival.

In 2018, Giulio Piscitelli visited EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centers for War Victims in Kabul and Lashkar-gah, Afghanistan and met the victims of a war that has continued for over 18 years amid public indifference. He gave them a face, a name, discovered their stories.

Stories that speak of violence that bursts into daily life, without warning. Stories that show the wound(zakhem, it is said in the Dari language) caused by war. Wounds are put at the center of the photographic narrative, because that is what war causes. However, the deepest wounds are also seen: the fear and exasperation that never leave you while the rest of the world seems to forget about them.

Giulio Piscitelli shows the strength of the Afghan people, his shots transport the subjects into an almost unreal, illuminated world, into a fixity without time or space, into the truth of war always and everywhere.

EMERGENCY began working in the country in 1999. Since then, it has treated nearly 6 million peoplein the two surgical centers, the Anabah Maternity Center and the several FAPs (First Aid Posts and Health Centers) located in rural and poorly connected areas with the main hospitals.

For more than 18 years, the war in Afghanistan has continued to hurt, kill and destroy. And on the ground there is still the legacy of previous wars: landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to maim children and adults, especially civilians.

“We have chosen to celebrate these 25 years by showing everyone, through Giulio’s photos, what EMERGENCY has been doing since its inception.Treating victims, year after year, we have understood one simple thing. That whatever the weapons, whatever the reasons, war always has the same face: dead, wounded, people suffering. It is by being faced with the suffering of hundreds of human beings every day that we began to mature the idea of a community in which relationships are based on solidarity and respect. A society that does away with war, forever,” says Gino Strada, Founder of EMERGENCY.

The exhibition will also remain open on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15 during the Festival of the Arts and on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 during the Festival Nono.

The exhibition, designed as part of the project NO TO WAR, for a peaceful and inclusive society that respects human rights and diversity among peoples, is made possible thanks to the contribution of theItalian Agency for Development Cooperation(AICS).
