For Elliott Erwitt’s 90th birthday, the Scuderie del Castello Visconteo in Pavia presents the exhibition “Elliott Erwitt Icons,” which runs until Jan. 27, 2019. It is a retrospective exhibition showcasing 70 of the illustrious photographer’s most famous shots: his lens has often captured moments and situations that have become inscribed in the collective imagination as true icons; this is the case of the quarrel between Nixon and Kruschiev, the image of Jackie Kennedy during her husband’s funeral, the famous boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the engagement of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco.
Also encountered in the exhibition itinerary are the famous portraits of Che Guevara, Marlene Dietrich, the series dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, as well as the themes most beloved by the public for their romantic force such as California Kiss, or the more intimate and private ones, such as the one of his first-born daughter on the bed, observed by her mother.
The exhibition will not lack Erwitt’s more ironic side with images of the Bratsk wedding, or those of his dogs (here is our in-depth look at Elliott Erwitt’s dogs).
The exhibition closes with a series of self-portraits, testifying to how Erwitt also made fun of himself, and a section with the original newspapers and publications where the images first appeared.
A series of educational activities, meetings and free guided tours for children and adults are scheduled throughout the event.
The exhibition, curated by Biba Giacchetti, is organized and produced by ViDi, with Civita Mostre and SudEst57 in collaboration with Fondazione Teatro Fraschini and the Municipality of Pavia - Culture, Tourism, Education, Youth Policies Sector. Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For all information you can call 0236638600, visit www.scuderiepavia.com or send an e-mail to info@scuderiepavia.com.
