From June 30 to Sept. 16, 2022, on the occasion of the Summer Jamboree 2022 to be held in Senigallia from July 30 to Aug. 7, the rooms on the second floor of Palazzetto Baviera will host the photographic exhibition Icons by Elliott Erwitt (Paris, 1928), curated by Biba Giacchetti, oragnized by Summer Jamboree in collaboration with SudEst57.
On display will be more than seventy shots, among the most famous of the famous photographer who will blow out his 94 candles this year, through which a cross-section of the history and customs of the 20th century is told, always with Elliott Erwitt’s typically ironic gaze.
The works on display encapsulate the entire course of his long professional life through his most famous photographs, the ones he himself loves the most. The famous portraits of Che Guevara, Kerouac, Marlene Dietrich and the great movie stars, above all Marilyn Monroe. Also, photographs that made history, such as the quarrel between Nixon and Krusciev, Kennedy’s funeral, and the great match between Frazier and Ali. There will be no shortage of the icons most beloved by the public for their romantic power, such as the California Kiss, a symbol of timeless love: the image reflected in the rearview mirror of a couple kissing inside a car. A photo that seems to be constructed at a desk, but is actually spontaneous, as Erwitt recounts in his biography Luck, explaining how chance played a key role in the creation of his most famous shots.
Then there are the more intimate and private photographs, such as the one of his first-born daughter observed on the bed by her mother, as well as a collection of self-portraits that tells how Erwitt loves to make fun of even himself.
A collection of images representing a cross-section of twentieth-century history and costume, told through his magic touch, his great compositional ability and constant homage to the absurd and what may appear ambiguous. Always in black and white, they recount life, miseries and passions, with the lens fixed almost exclusively on people and animals, caught in seemingly insignificant, sometimes even comical, attitudes. What emerges are the emotions proper to human beings, seen and depicted in a simple and sincere way.
Icons is a concentrate of all the genius of Elliott Erwitt, a compendium of humanity, lightness and depth.
The exhibition is part of the schedule of Senigallia City of Photography.
Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, holidays and pre-holidays, 5 to 11 p.m. Closed Mondays. During Summer Jamboree 2022 from July 30 to August 7, the exhibition will be open daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.
