Eden exhibition with animals by Irene Meniconi is underway in Poppi

Through Aug. 29, the SanLorenzo Gallery of Art is hosting the exhibition 'Eden,' featuring the animals of Irene Meniconi, an artist who was abused as a girl and was reborn through art.

Until August 29, 2021, SanLorenzo Arte Gallery in Piazza Bordoni 4, Poppi(AR), hosts Eden, a solo exhibition by Irene Meniconi curated by Silvia Rossi. “I was constantly searching for something mysterious, immersing myself in nature, almost blending into its very essence, out of the world of men.” In these words Irene Meniconi encapsulates her entire poetics.

The subjects depicted by the Tuscan artist are the animals she loves so much, but her work is not limited to their exaltation: in fact, the animals, says the artist, “invite us to search within ourselves to undertake the inner journey we need.” “I was constantly searching for something mysterious,” says Irene Meniconi, “I was immersing myself in nature, almost blending into its very essence, outside the world of humans. Since childhood I have lived in close contact with nature, immersed in it. Anything that had to do with matter, imagination and creativity appealed to me deeply. I was free to experience the world around me being shaped and molded by my psyche. It was probably in this way that my two great passions, the passion for nature and the passion for art, were born in me and went on their way hand in hand. All my artistic production is a research and a discovery concerning personality and artistic expression with a special attention towards the intimate and psychological sphere of me, of the user of the work and of the work itself.”

L’ art, for Irene Meniconi, is a powerful means of healing, caregiving and reworking. In fact, the artist is a “survivor” who was sexually and psychologically abused, from 15 to 21 years old, by a trusted person. And she does not want to hide it; on the contrary, the choice to tell her story is a natural one. “In each of my works a part of the journey I had to go through in order to survive is represented. The aspects are many and some probably unconscious: the awareness, first of all, of what happened to me, the fear, the anger, the frustration, the anguish, the panic, the feeling of being perpetually in danger, the awareness, the freedom, the letting go. These and many other elements of a journey undertaken, also availing myself of the help of a psychotherapist, are recounted by many of my works.”

“Irene’s work,” writes Silvia Rossi, “is not, however, to be read in a key of anachronistic pain and reworking. Her works are a hymn to rebirth, strength, diversity, justice and beauty. They are works that celebrate life and protect it. They are also an invitation to reflect on our attitude toward nature and the control we try to have over it, on the responsibility of the power of our actions, as a mass and as individuals. The animals that watch and protect us on his canvases invite us to care, to respect each other. They are a tale of an Eden lost but more importantly found Eden, the garden of wonders, the fruitful oasis, the paradise on earth is that space we build with our actions, with conscious choices, with balance. The attainment of an earthly state of grace, however, is not due or automatic, but requires a definite commitment. It is a request and at the same time an indication, a suggestion for a way forward, all of us, together.”

Irene Meniconi was born in Florence in 1986 and then moved, while still a child, to Chianti, a place immersed in nature that will always be the element of inspiration for her future artistic production. After graduating from the “Leon Battista Alberti” art high school and graduating from theAcademy of Fine Arts in Florence, she has been carrying out commissioned work for several years, collaborating with private clients or companies in a wide variety of sectors: from fashion to food and wine products, from publishing to interior decoration for professional studios, public and private spaces. At the same time he pursues his personal artistic research, the result of both a technical and psychological journey, producing works with mixed media all united by an accurate and characteristic pen drawing.
