Drawings from the Vatican Library on display to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Francesco Borromini's death


As part of the Celebrations of the 350th anniversary of the death of Francesco Borromini, an exhibition featuring drawings from the Vatican Library.

On Dec. 12, the exhibition"Francesco Borromini. TheDrawings of the Vatican Library" at Room XVII of the Vatican Art Gallery.

A wide selection of drawings from the Vatican Library made by the great seventeenth-century architect will be on view until January 5, 2018.



In particular, the exhibition will focus on his activity during the pontificate of Pope Innocent X Pamphilj (1644-1655).
The drawings come from the Vaticano Latino 11257 and 11258 manuscripts containing the papers of Virgilio Spada, Borromini’s friend and supporter, from the Chigiano P.VII.9 and Chigiano M.IV manuscripts.

Also exhibited is the design for the Fountain of Rivers in Piazza Navona, accompanied by evidence of the design process for the remodeling and organic arrangement of Palazzo Pamphilj. Plus some drawings for the Basilica of St. John Lateran and for the grandiose project for the renovation of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. There are other drawings of various subjects that testify to the versatility of the great Ticino architect.

The exhibition, curated by Alessandra Rodolfo, is part of the Celebrations for the 350th Anniversary of the Death of Francesco Borromini 1667-2017, promoted by the Vatican Museums, the National Academy of St. Luke and the Faculty of Architecture of Sapienza University of Rome, with the participation of the Swiss Institute in Rome and MAXXI, under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

The Celebrations include a rich program of events: from December 11 to 13 there will be a study conference attended by international scholars such as Joseph Connors and Werner Oechslin; on January 27, 2018 scheduled the Missa Ecce Sarcedos Magnus at the Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza; in March there will be a series of meetings-conferences at MAXXI.
