From February 25 to March 26, 2020, theKorean Cultural Institute in Rome presents From the past, an exhibition that formally presents itself as a modern multimedia art exhibition, but the distinctiveness is found in the fact that the subjects and sources of the works come from traditional cultural heritages of Korea. That is to say, the works were born inspired by the past, reinterpreted through current cultural technology, multimedia arts, and encapsulate the intent to show the potential of traditional culture in the future within the continuity of time.
Another peculiarity is the direct and engaging way in which viewers can interact with the exhibition, emphasizing the importance of communication.
The exhibition is divided into three rooms: the central room is devoted to the past, featuring artist Junghwan Sung and displaying traditional paintings by famous painters Hong-do Kim (1745-1806?) and Yun-bok Sin (1758- ?) from the Joseon period, which will be made visible to viewers through three-dimensional graphics and animation techniques, and it will be possible to listen to traditional Korean instruments with just a touch of the screen; Room 1 represents the present of artist Seung ku Han, where inside you can try playing the Buk, one of the traditional Korean instruments still used today, and interact personally to discover theHanbok (traditional Korean dress) worn by the ancient officials within the portraits; Room 2 represents the future of the multimedia art group Le Congpoje. In this space they have reinterpreted the world of the famous Joseon-period scholar Jeong-hui Kim (1786-1856) through a futuristic language of interactive video and sound. In particular, the beauty of forms found in the artist’s major works, Yu Hee Sam Me and Gye San Mu Jin, is connected with the beauty of the Korean alphabet shapes by making them visible in a three-dimensional space. In addition, the sounds that fill the staging spaces, through various processes of changing the property of materials, express artist Jeong-hui Kim’s artistic philosophy of crossing the boundaries of past memories and connecting to the future.
