Desenzano del Garda dedicates an exhibition to Mario Schifano and his hand-retouched photographs

From April 9 to May 1, 2022, the G.B.Bosio Civic Gallery in Desenzano del Garda is hosting the exhibition Mario Schifano. Enamels on Photos, curated by Giovanni Tiboni and coordinated by Stefanini Arte.

Photographs hand-retouched by the artist, selected from a body of several thousand, will be on display. In a long exercise of rereading the daily news practiced since the late 1980s over the course of ten years, Mario Schifano took dozens of photographic shots almost daily, capturing from the always-on televisions with which he surrounded himself a wide range of images with different subjects and contours. In the following days, accomplishing a kind of automatic writing, he would highlight the contents and valences that were most interesting to him, thus emphasizing all that he had previously focused on through photography.
Thus the photographer would accumulate notes, cues, notes; an iconographic sampler on which the painter would later intervene.

Thephotographic image and the graphic sign are thus continually placed in dialogue.
