Spazio Tempesta in Recanati is hosting, from July 27 to September 29, the exhibition Caro Alberto, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio: an exhibition of postcards dedicated to Alberto Garutti, an artist who passed away on June 24, 2023. The event was the result of a collaboration between former students and friends of the artist who came together in the WhatsApp chat “Condominio” to remember and pay tribute to him. The exhibition features postcard-works made by students and former students of the Academies of Fine Arts of Macerata, Bologna, Milan Brera, Milan Polytechnic and IUAV University of Venice.

Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, curator of the exhibition and a friend of Garutti, describes in his text the significant impact Garutti had in both art and teaching. Garutti was known for his unique way of engaging students, treating them as artists in their own right and stimulating them to create and discuss their own works as equals. This approach was also reflected in his public art, which focused on discussion with the audience for whom the works were intended.

The exhibition is intended to be a tribute to Garutti, described as an “infinite artist of landscape and relationships.” At the end of the exhibition, the exhibited material will be collected in a collective box-work and donated to theAlberto Garutti Archive.

Alberto Garutti (1948-2023) was a leading figure in the Italian and international art scene for more than four decades. His work explored the dynamics between art, viewer and institution, radically transforming the processes of public art since the 1990s. He has taught at the Brera Academy in Milan, the IUAV in Venice and the Milan Polytechnic, contributing significantly to the education of generations of artists.

Garutti has participated in major international events such as the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennale, and has created works for museums and institutions including SMAK in Ghent, Museion in Bolzano, and MAXXI in Rome. Among his best-known works are “To Those Born Today” and “All the Steps I’ve Taken in My Life Have Brought Me Here, Now,” installed in different cities around the world. In 2023, a project for a major monograph on his artistic activity, conceived by Germano Celant and supported by six museum institutions, won the Italian Council call for papers sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and will be published in spring 2024.

The exhibition Caro Alberto is a tribute to the legacy of an artist who was able to deeply intertwine art with life and human relationships, leaving an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of those who knew him.
