Dante's Comedy according to Aligi Sassu on display in Bagnacavallo

The Museo Civico delle Cappuccine in Bagnacavallo hosts until January 9, 2022 a selection of the more than one hundred plates that Aligi Sassu dedicated to the three Cantiche of the Divine Comedy.

Until January 9, 2022, the Museo Civico delle Cappuccine in Bagnacavallo hosts the exhibition Come una fiamma bruciante. Dante’s Comedy according to Aligi Sassu, curated by Patrizia Foglia and Martina Elisa Piacente with the collaboration of Diego Galizzi and Carlos Julio Sassu Suarez, promoted by Comune di Bagnacavallo | Museo Civico delle Cappuccine and Archivio Aligi Sassu, under the patronage of Regione Emilia-Romagna | Servizio Patrimonio Culturale and Comune di Ravenna | Viva Dante 700.

The exhibition is part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death and presents the works that Aligi Sassu (Milan 1912 - Pollença 2000) dedicated to the three Cantiche of the Divine Comedy. It is proposed as an exciting journey through Dante’s plates charged with color and passion, a slow path that leads from the darkness of the underworld, pain and sin to the light of the empyrean, so that the visitor can fulfill Dante’s human poem. It is a deeply dramatic journey that has inspired many artists and in Sassu is expressed in the close dialogue between expressiveness and introspection. Accompanying the visitor through the works will be the words of the author himself, which at the same time will lead him into the world of the Supreme Poet.

After a work that lasted six years, in 1987 Sassu completed the Dante series: more than one hundred plates made in acrylic on cardboard. The artist confronted Poet and the Comedy by creating works that go beyond simple illustrations of the poem: in fact, they are marked by a strong emotional charge, color, and a passion for matter that shaped becomes image. Sassu approached Dante’s text in an original way, far from any descriptive form but rather eager to transfigure and almost reinvent the poetic verses.
