Two masterpieces by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo on loan to Brescia and two imperial busts in Rome mark the beginning of the collaboration between the Casa Museo Zani and the Galleria Borghese, uniting the collections of Renaissance art and Roman sculpture.

Brescia and Rome pay tribute to each other with the Brescia Rome project, a cultural twinning that connects the Galleria Borghese in Rome and the Paolo and Carolina Zani Foundation House Museum in Brescia. Conceived by Massimiliano Capella, Director of the Casa Museo Zani, and Emanuela Settimi, Curator of the Galleria Borghese, the project includes a double exhibition between the two cities, which will run fromOctober 11 to November 24, 2024.

At the Casa Museo Zani in Brescia, the Savoldo Borghese exhibition will feature two masterpieces by Brescian artist Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo (Brescia, c. 1480 - Venice, post-1548), on loan from the Galleria Borghese: a Bust of a Young Man and Tobiolo and the Angel. These works are considered among the most lyrical of the Renaissance painter, who, along with Moretto and Romanino, is counted among the great masters of Brescian and Lombard painting.

At the same time, two busts of emperors from the Zani Collection will be displayed in the Emperors’ Room of the Galleria Borghese. The sculptures, which can be traced back to the ambit of Guglielmo and Giovanni Battista della Porta, portray Emperor Hadrian: one in his official portrait according to the model in the Capitoline Museums, the other depicting the emperor in his youth. The busts will be on view starting Oct. 10, at the conference Marble as Device. Matter and Surface, to be held at the Galleria Borghese on Oct. 10 and 11. This artistic exchange between Rome and Brescia is a unique opportunity to see masterpieces of rare beauty and celebrate the dialogue between two important Italian art collections.
