It opened on March 17, 2018 and runs until July 15, the exhibition Creti, Canova, Hayez. The Birth of Modern Taste between the 1700s and 1800s in the Collezioni Comunali d’Arte, on view in Bologna at the Collezioni Comunali d’Arte in Piazza Maggiore. One hundred and fifty works from the Bolognese museum, some of which are usually kept in storage (such as pastels and paintings by Angelo Crescimbeni, Sebastiano Gamma and Coriolano Vigo), are placed side by side with loans from MAMbo, the Archaeological Museum and the Museo Civico Medievale to set up an itinerary that investigates the history of taste between the 18th and 19th centuries with reference to the city of Bologna.
The exhibition opens to coincide with the birth of the museum’s new visitor route located on the second floor of Palazzo d’Accursio, which was necessary due to restoration work on part of the building’s roof (they started last November and will be completed by July 2019). The public will be able to admire works by the three artists who give the exhibition its title(Antonio Canova, Francesco Hayez, Donato Creti) and other big names in the history of Bolognese art: Giovanni Antonio Burrini, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Donato Creti, Pelagio Palagi, Ferdinando Cavalieri, Cincinnato Baruzzi, Raffaele Faccioli, Antonio Mancini, Coriolano Vighi, Giorgio Kienerk, Giuseppe Varlese and Alfredo Savini. Space was also given to the reconstruction of the Rusconi family’s baroque parlor.
“I am proud to present this new narrative of our collection,” said Councillor for Culture and City Promotion Matteo Lepore. “The Istituzione Musei has very intelligently created this exhibition that welcomes visitors to a museum that is in fact a true gateway to the city’s collections, transforming the period of works and construction sites into an unprecedented opportunity that also allows the discovery of masterpieces not usually visible to the public, as is also the case with the ”Family Portraits“ exhibition, which opened a few days ago at the Archeologico, another museum currently under renovation.”
Visiting hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Closed on non-holiday Mondays and May 1. Ticket prices: 5 euros full, 3 euros reduced. For info, visit the Bologna Museums website.
