From July 31, 2020 to January 31, 2021, the Great Gymnasium of Pompeii Archaeological Park will host the exhibition Venustas. Grace and Beauty in Pompeii.
The exhibition aims to present the aesthetic canons and tastes of the people of the Vesuvian area in antiquity (from the 8th-7th centuries BC to the 1st century AD.), based on artifacts found in the various sites of the Pompeii Park: about three hundred finds that occurred in the protohistoric village of Poggiomarino, in the protohistoric necropolis of Striano and that of the Archaic age of Stabia, in the sanctuaries of Pompeii and Stabia, in the villas of Oplontis and Terzigno, and in the settlement of ancient Pompeii and its surroundings.
A rich exhibition that will give the public an opportunity to learn about creams, makeup, perfumes, mirrors, clothing and jewelry ornaments, amulets, precious objects and statuettes dedicated to the gods. Fancy objects for an ideal of perfection and beauty.
Venustas, or beauty, grace, elegance, charm, perfectly sums up these ideals sought after, particularly by the female world in every age.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the House of the Lovers, which opened to the public last November after being secured, will also be introduced into the Park’s one-way visitor itineraries. The House owes its name to a verse engraved in a small painting found in the garden portico: “Amantes, ut apes, vitammelitamexigunt” (Lovers lead, like bees, a life as sweet as honey).
