From October 24, 2019 to March 8, 2020, Correggio’s Portrait of a Young Woman, among the masterpieces of the Renaissance, will be on loan from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to the Chiostri di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia.
Five centuries after it was created in about 1520, the painting will arrive in one of the Reggio Emilia artist’s lands thanks to an agreement between the city of Reggio Emilia, the Palazzo Magnani Foundation and the Russian museum headquarters.
The exhibition, curated by Claudio Franzoni and Pierluca Nardoni, will allow visitors to admire the most important portrait executed by the painter.
The exhibition will also be an opportunity to resume some studies related to aspects that have remained uncertain, such as the name of the person portrayed, the interpretation of the signs and symbols that adorn her, and the purposes for which she was painted. Roberto longhi saw in the young woman the poetess Veronica Gambara. She is certainly a woman of high rank, as she is wearing elengant dresses, jewelry and is combed with an elaborate hairstyle: forms typical of early 16th-century women’s fashion.
On the rim of the cup she holds in her hands appears a quotation from theOdyssey, evidence of the high-ranking cultural background of the patron.
