Corrado Veneziano's provocations on display in Rome

The exhibition Softness & Provocation, a solo show by Corrado Veneziano (Tursi, 1958), an experienced artist who has exhibited in numerous shows in Italy and abroad, will be held from July 5 to 12, 2018, at Spazio Medina in Rome. The works on display at Spazio Medina intend to corrode the boundary of bourgeois conformism to the point of highlighting a radical critique of it emphasized in the style adopted, which involves strident contrasts of color and symbolism: thus, here is the “M” of the McDonald chain appearing on Leonardo’sLast Supper, or the Facebook logo between the hands of God and Adam in the reproduction of Michelangelo’s very famous fresco in the Sistine Chapel.

This chromatic and cultural imagery is characterized precisely by continuous references to the emblematic languages of our time, with quotations that see contemporary incipits or symbols placed in close synergy with each other and working toward a totalizing immersion in the deepest subconscious. Veneziano places himself outside the cataloguing of conceptual art as a residual frontier, but at the same time he proves himself simultaneously immersed in the present as an observer of today’s cultural landscape. Here he breaks into it with the same lightness as the brushes he uses with “meekness” and sometimes launching into open provocations: all instruments of conjunction between the permanence of the past and the abstraction of the future.

“The visual universe of Corrado Veneziano’s works while coming from another, different context,” argues the curator of the exhibition, Alessandro Dall’Oglio, “constitute a reserve of space and inner reflection. Straight lines, bar codes, signs and trademarks from the world of business and the web spill onto the canvas, which in this way becomes a ’storehouse of memories’ protecting the intimate space from the violent intrusion of the outside world. A wall beyond the curtain of color that the artist uses as a shield beyond which the most secret dialogue between the soul and the spirit of his poetic symbolism takes place.”
