Corpus Dei: Sabrina van den Heuvel's photographs on display in Florence

The exhibition 'Corpus Dei,' which showcases the latest work of Dutch photographer Sabrina van den Heuvel, opens in Florence.

Opening March 16 and running through April 18, 2018, is the Corpus Dei exhibition, featuring works by young Dutch photographer Sabrina van den Heuvel (1986). The exhibition is on view at theDutch University Institute of Art History in Florence, which has opened its halls for exhibitions of emerging artists since last year. Corpus Dei is an exhibition of photographs taken during Sabrina van den Heuvel’s “Grand Tour” to Italy, among ancient ruins, halls of historic palaces, and emblematic places of Italian classicism, all revisited in a contemporary key. Sabrina van den Heuvel’s photographs are inspired by the hilly landscapes of Tuscany and Latium, the artistic wonders of Italian cities, and are linked to the works of Michelangelo and Caravaggio, two artists who have deeply marked the photographer’s experience.

Among the photographs, the public will be able to admire some male nudes directly inspired by Michelangelo’s works, as well as his poetry: in these images, the presentation reads, “the model Jacopo allowed Sabrina to combine the fascination of anatomy with a sense of melancholy, made inside the Villa Adriana in Tivoli, which are also meant to refer to the love between the Roman emperor Hadrian and Antinous, a Greek boy of extraordinary beauty who was deified by Hadrian after his death.” Also on display will be photographs celebrating the rural life advocated by Michelangelo, as well as the Light and Darkness series with shots taken inside churches or in symbolic places such as the Boboli Gardens and recalling the contrasts of light and shadow in Caravaggio’s paintings.

Sabrina van den Heuvel, whose stylistic signature is characterized by black-and-white photography, graduated in 2008 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands, and works with important names in fashion and show business. Some of her photographs are exhibited at the Museum of Photography in The Hague and have been taken to various fairs around the world (from the New York Photo Festival to the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam, from PAN Amsterdam to Fotofever in Brussels). Many works can be found on his website www.sabrinavandenheuvel.com.

The exhibition is open daily Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Information can be found at www.niki-florence.org.
