The seventh edition of the Biennale Gherdëina began last August 8, in Ortisei, Val Gardena (Bolzano). Here is a selection of works on display.
The seventh edition of the Biennale Gherdëina, an exhibition held every two years in Ortisei, Val Gardena (Bolzano), began last Aug. 8 and will end Oct. 20. Curated by Adam Budak, this year’s event is titled A breath? a name? The ways of worldmaking and is centered on the theme of “creating new worlds.”
“The Gherdëina Biennale, with its focus on public space as a stage for sculptural works and participatory and community projects,” writes curator Budak, “has always been perceived as a celebration of a unique place, its rich culture and vibrant local tradition. As the title of this year’s Biennale declares, the act of breathing (life) and the act of naming (recognition) constitute the framework of a political nature, the essential elements of an ’ecology of others.’ Therefore, the Biennale Gherdëina 7 celebrates the letics of affirmation. In the words of philosopher Rosi Braidotti, ’We must borrow energy from the future to overthrow the conditions of the present. It’s called love for the world.(...) Imagine what you don’t have yet; anticipate what we want to become. We must empower people to desire, to will, to aspire to a different world, to extract joyful, positive, affirming relationships and practices from the misery of the present. Ethics will drive affirmative politics’.” The Biennial of this seventh edition, the curator continues, “focuses on the importance and awareness of a political gesture in an active process of creating the world, on its dynamic factor that ensures a resilience of culture and nature, shapes the vernacular and emancipated unicity of a place, and manifests a mature and courageous vision of the future to come.”
Below is a gallery with some of the works on display, in the natural setting of Val Gardena, in keeping with the tradition of this exhibition.
