The Reggia di Caserta will host the first Italian retrospective of Kyle Thompson, a U.S. photographer, from March 28 to June 4, 2018.
His shots are conceptual: in his photographs people and places tell stories, surreal and dreamlike situations.
In singular atmospheres with abandoned houses, empty forests, rivers, lakes, he is the only presence: they are surreal and bizarre self-portraits .
He himself explores his own emotions and feelings in such contexts and intervenes in the scene with water, smoke, light effects.
“I had a terrible difficulty relating to people, so I ended up using myself in almost all my photos, spending several hours each day in wandering alone through empty forests taking self-portraits thanks to the timer on my cameras,” he said.
For the Caserta exhibition, Thompson devised a special project exploring the context and environment around his images.
The surrounding natural space is considered by him as a kind of stage, and his images become diptychs: one large one is the artist’s self-portrait immersed in these natural spaces but within urban areas, the other small one presents the real environment in which this nature is immersed. One will realize how the city modifies nature.
The exhibition is curated by Gabriela Galati.
