The rooms on the ground floor of the Museo Novecento in Florence will once again host a focus on contemporary painting: from September 30, 2023, the British painter Cecily Brown will be the protagonist.
On the occasion of the exhibition Torments, Temptations, Trials and Tribulations, curated by Sergio Risaliti, the artist’s works will be exhibited for the first time in Florence, at the Museo Novecento and Palazzo Vecchio. The exhibition will bring together more than 30 works, including paintings and works on paper, most of them previously unpublished, born from a reflection around the Temptations of St. Anthony, a subject widely investigated by the great artists of the past.
The title chosen evokes the life of asceticism, spiritual battles and hardships of the saint, the first founder of monastic life and spiritual father of anchorites. A Renaissance-era panel version of the Temptations of St. Anthony, from a private collection, will be exceptionally exhibited in the chapel on the ground floor of the Museo Novecento.
The exhibition project will continue in the Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, where, inside the Camerino of Bianca Cappello, mistress of Duke Francesco I de’ Medici, Cecily Brown will present a single canvas, an exercise in grasping different levels of reality and visibility. Again, the work stands out in a perfect balance between vital profusion, drawings and colors, and an underlying narrative and iconographic structure with which the artist intends to speak about history and life.
