The Fumetti nei Musei project, conceived by MiBACT and carried out with Coconino Press - Fandango for museum educational activities and aimed at children and young people participating in workshops and didactics, is now in its second edition. Twenty-nine new albums have been produced that tell through comics the contemporary nature of Italian museums and places of culture.
After the great success of winning the Gran Guinigi award for the best publishing initiative 2018 at Lucca Comics & Games, which involved twenty-two museums in Italy, from Pompeii to the Colosseum, the second edition was born with twenty-nine more stories, for a total of 51 books.
At theIstituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome, an exhibition featuring images of the covers of the books, a selection of the comic book plates, sketches and sketches by the artists is underway just until February 16, 2020.
From the Rock of Gradara to Castel Sant’Angelo, from the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo to Villa d’Este and Herculaneum: these are the settings of the twenty-nine new stories featuring real-life characters, monsters, fantastic creatures, ghosts and superheroes. As in the first edition, both great authors and up-and-coming young cartoonists participated in the second one.
“Italy has always excelled in the field of protection, becoming an example all over the world. The time has come to add to this investment a great attention to the contemporary, which has been neglected until now. This project, in addition to narrating museums with a new language and letting the imagination of some of Italy’s best cartoonists run free, also shows how investing in preservation and the past can be an opportunity to give greater impetus to cultural and creative industries and young artists. This is an innovative project that the Ministry cares a lot about,” said MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini.
“The comics in this series are free, brave, exaggerated, and take very seriously their role as heralds of all that is free, brave, and exaggerated in the collections and places of Italian museums. The excellence of ingenuity, the revolutionary nonconformity of the avant-garde, the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the custody of Italy’s artistic heritage, but also minimal episodes, stories of chance encounters with great works, the amazement of those who still do not have culture and who from today will begin to demand it. This is what our stories tell, and they do it with a sampling of very different styles, a photograph of the heady moment that Italian comics are going through. We visit museums, we read comics, and from today we can also visit comics and read museums,” said Coconino Press director Fandango.
